This weeks topic in class is of great interest to me. This week we are discussing nutrition, food security, and health. For the past few years, I have been interested in this issue for several reasons. I plan to explain more of this in future blogs, especially since I'm writing my paper on this issue my mind will be full of thoughts on this issue, but for right now and if you all can get a chance to see it before class, please look at this video....

GREENING THE DESERT

A couple of years ago, I participated in an 2 week intensive permaculture course. It changed my life! It changed my life, because I was able to connect to our mother earth in ways that my ancestors did for thousands of years.

My paper topic is on food security, and even before doing a lot of research on this topic, I already had the idea of using permaculture as a solution for this global problem. And I'm not just thinking about the rural communities, but also urban settings where many of the permaculture principles can be applied.

This video is a good introduction of how it can be used anywhere, even in areas where many people thought it was impossible. I'm really excited to be sharing this with the whole class, and to be able to incorporate it into a paper, since I have been wanting to for many years.

Permaculture can help people with food security issues, as well as a means to get out of poverty.
This is a start to creating self-sustainable communities.

hi yaneth, first of all, i really enjoyed your presentation. it's great to hear about a topic from someone who is both passionate and knowledgeable. i really respect the principles of permaculture, especially the idea that the excess is shared with the larger community. we should take a lesson from plants and animals--they take what they need and leave the rest for someone else!

I love the idea of working with Mother Nature to develop sustainable solutions to human problems. I think that over the past century, there is such strain in the relationship between human advancement and nature which is now turning around and impeding our advancement. If humans are looking to advance any further in the 21st century, we have to start by mending our relationship with nature.

Yaneth,

First, you had a great presentation. I found it very interesting. I really like this idea of permaculture. It is important to live in a world that is sustainable for future generations and your presentation and post gave great insight into achieving that. Thanks for your post.

Yaneth, it was really great seeing some of permaculture ideas at work at Proyecto Jardin. The way the herbs were planted and watered, and the faucet that is open, with the water flowing into an area with flowers was especially amazing! It is such a small thing, but so different in this age where all our waste quickly disappears through pipes to never be seen or smelled again. Thanks for giving us a tour!
